Ingredients

All you need are a few pantry staples and, of course, plenty of apples!

  • 5 pounds of apples
  • 3/4 c. coconut or brown sugar
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract

How to Make Slow Cooker Apple Butter

1. Prep the Apples- First, wash, core, and slice the apples. This is the most difficult part of the whole process. You can peel them if you prefer a smoother butter, but it’s not required—especially since you'll blend it later.

2. Load the Slow Cooker- Add the apples to the slow cooker. Then, top with the coconut/brown sugar, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and salt. Stir together.

3. Cook Low and Slow- Cover and cook on low for 10 hours. The apples will break down and darken into a rich, caramel-colored mixture.

4. Blend and Thicken- Use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker (or carefully transfer to a regular blender in batches). Stir in the vanilla extract. If you want it thicker, continue cooking uncovered for another 1–2 hours.

Storing Your Homemade Apple Butter

Once cool, store in airtight jars or containers. It keeps in the fridge for up to 3 weeks or can be frozen for longer storage. It's also perfect for gifting during the fall season—tie a ribbon around a jar for a sweet homemade present.
