Orange-Glazed Cauliflower

Lightly fried cauliflower bites in a sweet, honey-orange glaze: this orange-glazed cauliflower makes a terrific entrée or side dish! Satisfying for vegetarians and meat-lovers alike!

"Is this chicken what I have?"

We all remember this infamous line uttered by a particular blonde superstar. Although, they make so many substitutes these days- vegan mac & cheese, Just Like Beef, Chick'n, and cookie dough made from garbanzo beans.  Somewhere, someone has likely created a "tuna" noodle casserole. Maybe they are against eating sea creatures. We won't ask about the specific contents. Maybe Jessica was just way before her time...

So while this dish may look like chicken, it is all cauliflower. And, it might not taste like chicken, but it's delicious and goes well with rice and stir fry. So, maybe you've adopted "Meatfree Mondays," have committed to a healthier lifestyle, like to try new things, or you just really love cauliflower. No worries- all are welcome.

Before I had to give up gluten- orange or honey chicken was my go-to Chinese takeout order. It was sweet, tender, and never disappointed!

This version takes my favorite parts, adds some healthier twists, and features cauliflower as the main ingredient. Still tender, sweet, and never disappoints!

Orange-Glazed Cauliflower Tips & Tricks

To make this recipe gluten free, stick with almond and/or oat flour.

Coating the individual florets takes some time, but it is worth it!

This recipe is best when consumed soon after cooking. The flavor is still good a day or two later, but the cauliflower becomes a bit mushy.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 head of cauliflower, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp. milk
  • 1/2 c. flour (I used oat and almond)
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 Tbsp. oil (I used coconut)
  • 1/3 c. orange juice
  • 2 Tbsp. honey
  • 1 Tbsp. coconut aminos or soy sauce
  • Optional: sesame seeds or scallions
Instructions
  • Bring a medium pot, filled halfway with water, to a boil. Chop and wash the cauliflower. Then, boil the florets for 3-4 minutes. Next, drain and allow to cool for a few minutes.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the egg and milk. In a separate shallow dish, mix the flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Dip cauliflower in the egg mixture. Then, coat with the flour mixture. Heat a large skillet with the oil over medium heat. Lightly fry each side about 2-3 minutes, until browned.
  • In a separate skillet, heat the orange juice, honey, and soy sauce over medium heat. Bring to a boil and allow to thicken for 3-4 minutes. Then, add the cauliflower pieces and stir carefully. Garnish with sesame seeds.
