Ingredients You’ll Need

Making Patriotic S’mores Cereal Treats requires just a handful of ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 4 cups of gluten free cereal (like Golden Grahams or another graham-flavored cereal)
  • 2 c. gluten free graham cracker pieces
  • 2 c. mini marshmallows (can leave out if you plan to add white candies)
  • 1 c. chocolate chips (or mini chocolate chips)
  • 6 Tbsp. butter
  • 10 oz. marshmallows
  • 4-5 mini Hershey's bars, chopped
  • Red and blue sprinkles or M&Ms

How to Make Gluten Free Patriotic S’mores Bars

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, stir together the cereal, graham cracker pieces, and mini marshmallows. Set bowl aside.
  2. Melt the Butter and Marshmallows: Start by melting the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Once melted, add in the chocolate chips and marshmallows and stir until they’re completely melted and smooth.
  3. Coat the Cereal: Quickly pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the cereal. Then, carefully stir until well coated.
  4. Press into a Pan: Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it. Transfer the cereal mixture into the pan and press it down evenly with a spatula, the bottom of a measuring cup, or your hands. You can spray with nonstick cooking spray to help. The more you press, the firmer the cereal treats will be.
  5. Add a Patriotic Touch: Before the treats cool, sprinkle some red, white, and blue M&Ms or sprinkles over the top. Then, add some chopped mini Hershey's bars. Push down slightly. This adds a festive touch, making these treats not only delicious but also perfect for summer.
  6. Let Them Cool: If you can, allow the treats to cool completely at room temperature, which will take about 30-60 minutes. Once they’ve cooled and set, cut them into squares or rectangles.

Why are they called s'mores?

While the true creator is difficult to pinpoint, credit is given to the Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts of America. These treats first appeared in a cookbook in the early 1920s, referred to as a "graham cracker sandwich." The book referenced this campfire snack already being popular with the scouts. Early versions were also known as Some Mores. Today, that title has been shortened to create s'mores.
