Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Peppers

Loaded with thinly sliced steak, onions, and cheese, these Philly cheesesteak stuffed peppers make a healthy dinner any night of the week!

If you've been to Philly, or perhaps grew up nearby, you know what makes a true Philly cheesesteak.

So, Pennsylvanians will know that I am cheating...But, these stuffed peppers are so tasty, I doubt anyone will care!

True Philly cheesesteak features onions and...Cheez Whiz. Yep, that's right!

So, I did not use any Cheez Whiz, but your choices are your own...feel free to go for it!

Stuffed peppers are a terrific dinner option. They seem a little fancy, but are super simple, healthy, and delicious! There are so many flavor possibilities! Typically, you begin with meat and veggies. Maybe cheese or a sauce. Rice is also popular. Without it, stuffed peppers make a low-carb dinner. They could also be a great way to repurpose leftovers.

So, brown some steak and let's get stuffing!

  • Bell Peppers
  • Onion
  • Thinly Sliced Steak
  • Cheese
  • Tomato Sauce

What is traditionally on Philly cheesesteak?

Thinly sliced ribeye, onions, and cheese on a hoagie roll. Pennsylvanians know the true cheese of choice is Cheez Whiz. No, seriously! At many restaurants you will also find provolone, peppers, mushrooms, and tomato sauce.

Do you have to boil peppers before stuffing them?

Boiling the peppers for a few minutes will help to cut down on the baking time. Otherwise, they may take up to 45 minutes in the oven. You can also pre-bake the peppers as you are preparing the stuffing.

Do you have to cook meat before stuffing peppers?

Yes. First, prepare the filling. Then, stuff inside the pepper. Add some cheese and bake. You can boil or pre-bake the peppers while preparing the stuffing. This will ensure your peppers will be tender in a shorter period of time.

Ingredients
  • 4 bell peppers
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 lb. steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 bell peppers, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1/2 c. tomato sauce
  • 8 slices of cheese
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the 4 bell peppers in half, removing the seeds, ribs, and stems. Then, brush with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Next, place in a baking dish and bake for 15 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the steak, seasoned with salt and pepper. Then, remove and set aside. Next, add 1 Tbsp. of olive oil to the same skillet. Sauté the peppers and onion for 4-7 minutes. Add the steak back to the skillet. Next, stir in the tomato sauce.
  3. Remove the peppers from the oven. Allow to cool slightly. Then, spoon the meat/veggie mixture inside each pepper. Top with a slice of cheese. Return to the oven for 15-20 minutes, until cheese is melted and peppers are fork tender.
